Albert J Cunningham

I'm not very good at noses, so I don't usually draw people, but I made an exception for Albert J Cunningham. Albert J Cunningham is my wife's grandad, and he's one of the most brilliant old people I've ever met.

When you know someone, you see them rather than their physicality - the face of a stranger is just a fleshy bag of wrinkles, but the face of someone you know captures their essence in a way that's hard to express. So I wanted to record Albert's Albert-ness without recording the topography which makes his face his. If you know what I mean.

We're going to send it to him as a get well soon card. He'll love it.
