Society in Decline

Check out this Flickr collection - some guy's been all around the USA taking photos of wicked old neon signs. I've never been to America, but this makes me want to. It's a shame how many of them have fallen into disrepair though - these are the cultural history of tomorrow, if you know what I mean, and obviously much more worthwhile than wars and politics and all that business. Actually, I read in Creative Review a while back that Soviet-era neon signs in Poland are currently being restored and used again, which is how it should be, definitely.

Also, what would be really great, would be if everybody had their own neon signs on their houses. Then you could say to people who'd never been to your house before, 'yes, it's the 8ft tall flamingo eating the palm tree, just down from the robot with the bowling ball'. Brilliant.
